The organisation of the academic year 2026/2027 in Ukraine is as follows:
| The beginning of the academic year* | August/September (Institutional autonomy) |
| Period(s) when there are educational activities** | September – November/December January/February– May/June |
| Examination periods*** | Winter examination period: December/January Summer examination period: June |
| The end of the academic year | August |
| Holidays | There is usually one significant main break in the academic year, the winter break that lasts for 2-3 weeks in December/January (Institutional autonomy) |
*The HEIs have institutional autonomy to set the date for the beginning of the academic year from the end of August to the beginning of September.
**The HEIs have the autonomy in deciding on their own individual academic calendar. They usually adopt the academic calendar before the start of each academic year. The first semester starts in September and ends in November/December. Second semester starts at the end of January/in February and ends at the end of May/beginning of June.
***The examination period lasts for about 4 weeks.
The security situation in the country led to several changes in the organisation of the academic year 2026/2027. The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine has allowed HEIs to tighten their study schedule in the autumn-winter period at their own discretion. HEIs may organise classes on Saturdays in the autumn of 2026 and spring of 2027, as well as prolong classes in the summer of 2027. Also, in the winter HEIs may organise classes in a distance format to the maximum extent possible.
